Separate Product Size, Internal Size and External Size

Product dimensions describe the item. Internal box dimensions describe the usable space after assembly, including the room needed for inserts, clearance and closure. External dimensions are checked separately for pallet layout, storage and shipping-space planning. Use the agreed drawing to define L × W × H and the measurement orientation.

Address the Packing Problem at Its Source

Empty space, concentrated loads and awkward packing are different problems. Each calls for a change to the relevant part of the package.

1 Movement Inside an Oversized Box

Excess space can allow the product to move and increase filler use. Custom internal dimensions and a fitted insert establish a more deliberate packing position, with clearance checked on the assembled sample.

2 Loads Concentrated on a Small Area

Heavy or uneven cargo can place pressure on the base, corners or an unsupported surface. The board, box structure, base support and product positioning need to be considered together against the intended stacking and handling conditions.

3 Printing and Structure Developed Separately

Artwork can disappear into folds, openings can interrupt important information and an insert can obstruct the closing sequence. Reviewing the structure and print layout together helps resolve these details before production approval.

Checks Matched to the Packaging Task

The approved structural sample, artwork and agreed specification provide the reference for checking materials, finished dimensions, closing sequence, insert fit and printed information. These checks are defined around the proposed box and packing arrangement.

Where performance testing is required, define the specimens, test methods, conditions and acceptance criteria. Board properties and assembled-package performance address different questions. A result for one board or packed configuration does not automatically cover a different size, structure or load.

Three Carton Sizes and FSC Documentation Coordination

An electronics manufacturer preparing products for European supply requested corrugated cartons together with FSC sourcing information and packaging documents. Chenjie coordinated three double-wall carton formats and the requested documentation within one order.

Project carton size Project quantity
600 × 300 × 140 mm 3,000 cartons
600 × 310 × 200 mm 1,000 cartons
400 × 260 × 200 mm 1,000 cartons
Total 5,000 cartons

The required FSC claim and supporting documents are reviewed against the packaging supplied and the order requirements.

Project dimensions, materials and quantities describe the individual orders. A new proposal is reviewed around the product, packed weight, internal protection, handling and stacking requirements.

A Practical Guide to Choosing Corrugated Boxes

Understand the construction, compare the complete packing arrangement and check the conditions behind a quotation or product claim.

What are corrugated boxes, and how do they differ from solid paperboard?

Corrugated boxes are made from paperboard with a fluted medium bonded to flat liners. The fluted structure is one part of how the finished package provides rigidity and product protection.

"Cardboard" is a broad everyday term. Solid paperboard cartons do not have the fluted core found in corrugated board and are often selected for retail presentation. Corrugated shipping cartons, printed mailers and heavy-duty structures are selected around a combination of protection, packing efficiency and presentation. The complete design matters more than the material name alone.

How do I choose board construction and strength?

Start with gross packed weight, load distribution, box dimensions, stacking height and duration, humidity and the handling route. Wall construction and flute profile describe the board; neither is a universal carrying-capacity rating.

Single-wall board has one fluted layer between two liners. Double-wall board has two fluted layers and three liners; triple-wall board has three fluted layers and four liners. The board construction and availability are confirmed for the proposed box design.

Measure What It Describes How to Use It
Wall construction and flute profile The board structure Compare the proposed construction together with board grade and box design.
Edge crush test, or ECT Edgewise compression resistance of a board specimen Use it as a board property, with the test method and conditions identified.
Burst test, often called Mullen Resistance of board to bursting pressure Keep it separate from ECT, puncture testing and whole-box compression.
Box compression test Compression resistance of the assembled box under defined conditions Assess the proposed box structure and relevant test configuration.

Do not convert a board rating into a universal load in kilograms. Use suitable material information and relevant package validation for the proposed design. For heavy-duty or UN fibreboard packaging, the box structure, contents, closure and applicable documents need their own review.

When do I need inserts or a heavy-duty box?

An outer box and an insert perform different jobs. The box contains the pack and contributes to stacking and handling performance. An insert positions the product and may provide cushioning or separate vulnerable surfaces. Adding board layers alone does not resolve movement inside the box.

A fragile compact item may need a fitted insert without an oversized heavy-duty carton. A heavier industrial item may need reinforced walls, base support and a defined lifting arrangement as well as internal positioning. Chenjie Pack can coordinate the outer box with shaped EPE or CR foam; paperboard supports are another design approach. Review the assembled pack rather than either component in isolation.

If the contents require dangerous goods packaging, use the specific UN design route instead of treating an ordinary heavy-duty box as automatically suitable.

What should I confirm for custom printed boxes?

Review artwork on the actual box structure. Check print surfaces, board appearance, colour references, folds, cuts, openings and the position of handling marks before approving the layout.

A digital artwork proof checks the proposed graphics; a structural sample checks fit, assembly and closure. They answer different questions. For a printed corrugated mailer, check the open and closed views so that lid artwork, side panels and insert positions work together. Chenjie Pack supports logo and multicolour printing; the printing specification is agreed for the individual design.

How should I compare bulk corrugated box quotes?

Compare quotations for the same specification and delivery scope. A lower box price can reflect different board, dimensions, printing or omitted inserts rather than a lower cost for the same packaging task.

Compare on the Same Basis Check in the Quotation
Finished pack Internal size, box structure, board and included inserts
Printed appearance Artwork version, print surfaces and agreed colour reference
Order volume Quantity per size or design, rather than only the combined order total
Setup and tooling Any cutting-die, printing-plate or other one-time charges
Delivery scope Packing, transport, destination and the agreed supply terms

For a new design, allow for sample and artwork approval before production. For a repeat order, identify the approved specification and any changes. Small-batch feasibility depends on the structure, printing and production requirements. Confirm the minimum quantity for each structure, size and print specification during quotation.

How can I verify FSC and environmental requirements?

Check both the supplier certificate and the claim attached to the order. Chenjie Pack’s FSC chain-of-custody scope includes corrugated paper packaging, but the supplied product must carry the applicable claim in the sales and shipping documents for that order.

Responsible sourcing, recycled content, recyclability, biodegradability and compostability are different attributes. Review the complete material combination, including coatings, foil liners, adhesives and inserts. Local collection and processing requirements matter, and mixed materials may need to be separated. An FSC claim does not establish a universal recycling or composting outcome.

What should I check before approving bulk production?

Use the agreed specification, drawing, structural sample and artwork as the approval reference. Check the material, finished dimensions, closing sequence, insert fit and printed information before releasing the design for production.

Where testing is required, establish the specimen, method, conditions and acceptance criteria. Keep sample approval, production and transportation as separate planning stages. A revised product, board or packing arrangement may need further review rather than automatically inheriting an earlier approval.

Ask who will manufacture the boxes, how the approved specification will be recorded and how material or design changes will be controlled. Review those answers alongside the factory information, sample and agreed inspection requirements.
