Start with a Clear Packaging Specification

The agreed specification gives purchasing and production teams a common reference. Discuss inspection priorities at the material, production and finished-pack stages so the checks address the details that matter to your order.

Review Point Details to Check Agreed Reference
1 Materials & Components Board construction, specified materials and internal protective components Material requirements and the agreed box-and-insert arrangement
2 Carton Production Dimensions, print placement, joints and closure details Approved dimensions, artwork and structural requirements
3 Finished Packaging Appearance, quantities, supply format and order-specific packing details Order requirements, acceptance criteria and handover arrangements

Inspection scope and sampling requirements are agreed for the project. Routine order checks and design-specific performance tests serve different purposes.

Packaging Tests Matched to the Job

A board specimen, an assembled box and a filled package provide different kinds of information. Select the relevant evaluation around the proposed packaging and the handling conditions it needs to address.

Box Compression Test Setup

ASSEMBLED BOX

Box Compression

Evaluate how an assembled box responds to compressive loading under defined conditions. Review the box construction, loading arrangement, conditioning and test method when interpreting the result.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Box structure
  • Loading conditions
  • Reported result
BOARD SPECIMEN

Board Bursting Strength

Measure the pressure a corrugated board specimen withstands before bursting under a flexible diaphragm. The result describes a material property and can support comparison of the proposed board specification.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Board specification
  • Test method
  • Reported pressure

PACKED CONFIGURATION

Drop Testing

Evaluate the packed configuration under specified drop heights and orientations. The contents or representative load, internal protection, closure and acceptance criteria are part of defining the test.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Packed load
  • Orientation
  • Package and contents condition

Videos illustrate test setups. The relevant report identifies the specimen, method, conditions and results.

Define the Setup Before Comparing Results

A useful result needs a clear test setup and agreed acceptance criteria. Confirm the proposed configuration and required evaluation before samples are submitted or performance claims are applied.

Test Detail What to Identify Why It Matters
Packaging Design Box dimensions, board, joints, inserts and closure Identifies the configuration being evaluated
Contents & Load Actual contents or representative load, arrangement and gross packed weight Establishes what the package must support and protect
Method & Conditions Required method, conditioning and applicable loading, sequence or orientation Makes the test context clear when reviewing results
Acceptance & Reporting Required measurements, package and contents checks, report scope and issuing body Defines the evidence needed for the purchasing decision

A Packing Arrangement Is More Than an Outer Box

A printing-ink packaging project combined an outer carton with metal inner containers and dividers. The container arrangement and internal separation formed part of the packing specification.

For another product or order, review the complete arrangement before applying existing documents or results. A different inner container, gross packed weight or closure can change what needs to be assessed.

Documents for Different Parts of the Decision

Management-system certification, sourcing claims and packaging performance documents address different questions. Review the named company, stated scope and relevant configuration for the proposed order.

Specified UN Packaging Design

TÜV SÜD PSB certificate UN 128596 0001 Rev.00 identifies a specified 4G fibreboard-box design for power-pack contents. Review the certificate, referenced report and permitted packing arrangement for the intended shipment.

The certificate concerns the stated design. A change to dimensions, materials, contents, inner protection or closure needs an applicability review.

ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management

The ISO 9001:2015 certificate shown covers paper packaging production and EPE packaging sales within its stated scope. It addresses the quality management system; package performance is evaluated for the relevant design and test conditions.

FSC Chain of Custody

FSC chain-of-custody certificate SAI-COC-016428 includes corrugated paper packaging in its stated scope. For an FSC order, confirm the applicable product and claim in the sales and shipping documents.

Ask us to confirm the relevant document set for your design, order and destination.

Which tests does my packaging need?

The relevant checks depend on the product, packaging design, packed load, handling route and customer requirements. Share the proposed configuration and any required test specification so the evaluation can be reviewed for the project.

Does a board rating tell me how much cargo the box can carry?

A board rating describes a material property. Edge crush resistance and bursting strength measure different responses of a board specimen. Cargo support and stacking also depend on the complete box, loading arrangement, duration and conditions. A box compression result must be interpreted for the tested configuration and intended use.

Are all performance tests carried out on every order?

Routine production checks and design-specific performance tests have different purposes. Confirm the inspection scope, sampling arrangements and any required test evidence when the order specification is agreed.

Can you provide a third-party report for my project?

Share the required standard, report scope and any nominated laboratory. We will review the available documents and whether additional testing or a designated laboratory is needed for the proposed pack.

Can the same UN certificate cover a different box or packing arrangement?

Applicability follows the tested design, permitted variations and relevant packing instructions. Changes to dimensions, materials, contents, inner protection or closure should be assessed before the document is used for another configuration.
